is based in Auburn, USA. Founded in 1993 by Auburn University architecture professors D. K. Ruth and Samuel Mockbee (1944-2001) within the university’s School of Architecture, the Rural Studio was conceived as a vehicle for improve the living conditions in rural Alabama and to include hands-on experience in an architectural pedagogy. Current directors are Andrew Frear and Bruce Lindsey.
Talking Cities features a lare-scale photo of the Rural Studio-project “Shiles House”. It was built by students of the University from recycled materials. The house is supported by telegraph poles in order to raise it above the swampy ground. Its foundations have been constructed using tyres which penetrate the interior of the building creating a winding staircase that wraps around the family room. The exterior is clad in oak shingles cut from wooden shipping palettes.
