Osservatorio Nomade are based in Rome. Founded in 2002 as an initiative of the Stalker Group, Osservatorio Nomade is a creative research network composed of artists, architects, video-makers and researchers of various disciplines from all over the world. They experiment with site research and specific territorial projects, reinvestigating visionary architectural projects such as Corviale, which have become politically contentious and socially marginalised.
“Corviale” is the name of a 958-metre-long concrete structure on the outskirts of Rome, which can be experienced in extracts within the installation: short films and documentaries from the two years spent working with one of the most imposing and monumental residential buildings in all of Europe will be presented within and around a reproduced elevator shaft from this building. The elevator is a symbol for the everyday problems that residents of the Corviale experienced with the public facilities of the building: generally not working, hard to find and yet the main access point. Stalker’s fundamental thesis for their manifold interdisciplinary strategies is that architecture, as a solid mass, cannot “change as quickly as the community that lives within it”. That is why they are pursuing the route of participative work with the residents in order to initiate a process that will produce an adaptive understanding of architecture and urban planning – through a community that is interested in their buildings and in the opportunities for adapting them.
