Arno Lederer (*1947), architect, is based in Stuttgart where he runs a joint studio with Jórunn Ragnarsdóttir and Marc Oei (LRO). Lederer is also professor at the University of Karlsruhe and at the University of Stuttgart. 2000-2005 he was a consultant for the German Museum of Architecture in Frankfurt/Main and curator at the Weissenhof Gallery of Architecture in
Stuttgart. He is also a scientific consultant for the Ministry of Building-Trade in Berlin and a council member of the Technical University HfT in Stuttgart.

LRO strives to define places through their existing tactile and physical characteristics, taking into account the given history of buildings and sites. Through transformation of existing structures, they combine the familiar with something totally new.

Talking Cities is presenting a large-format image of the ongoing project “State Theatre in Darmstadt”, an obsolete modernist building in Darmstadt, conceived as a drive-in theatre in the American style, complete with oversized car-park. With a new module made from glass blocks at the entrance, with bold colours on the ground floor and an open stage on the roof of the parking garage it’s possible to look upon the facelift of this structure as a model of restorative architecture, achieving a maximum of alteration to the building with relatively modest means.
