Karsen Konrad (*1962) is an artist based in Berlin. Konrad studied at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität, Mainz, at the Universität der Künste, Berlin and at the Royal College of Art, London. His evocative model cities are created from the refuse of domestic dreams: the discarded materials of 20th century dwellings and their interiors.
Talking Cities is showing “Stadtplaner’s Workshop”, Karsten Konrad’s fictional scale model of the Prager Straße in Dresden. The street is a major pedestrian thoroughfare and one of the key examples of modern GDR city planning, currently facing demolishment and restructuring as part of efforts to reconstruct the historic (medieval) city ground plan. Konrad’s model, made of recycled materials found on the site in Dresden, investigates the open-plan impression of the Prager Straße, which will soon be part of history.
