are the Leipzig-based Antje Heuer, architect (*1962); Stefan Rettich, architect (*1968) and architect and designer Bert Hafermalz (*1963). They set up an office together in 1999.
KARO is a founding member of L21, a group of architects in Leipzig who concern themselves with urban transformation processes. For KARO, encountered reality is a resource and starting point for architectural and urban processes.
Working with architektur+netzwerk, the Leipzig studio KARO initiated a project in 2005 in which a temporary district library was built the Magdeburg district of Salbke. The overgrown lot, which once actually housed a library building, was fitted with a stable structure made of stacked beverage crates, which residents then turned into an informal, temporary library, using their own book donations. Talking Cities is presenting a “reading sculpture”, made of 230 beer crates. The books on display are from the project in Salbke. A video will be shown to clarify the context and to document the entire project, which will take on a new dimension by being present at the exhibition in Essen.
